Expert 2000 Mazda MX-5 Miata review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
The car that started the roadster revival more than 10 years ago is spruced up for the spring and summer with a Special Edition model. Unique features on the Miata Special Edition include a six-speed manual transmission, parchment-colored leather upholstery, “mahogany mica” paint, a 200-watt Bose audio system and other amenities.

Miata debuted for the 1990 model year as a basic sports car like the British roadsters of the 1950s and 1960s but with Japanese quality and reliability. Though it was redesigned in 1999, the current Miata retains similar dimensions and styling as the original.

Exterior
With an overall length of 155 inches, the Miata is a trim-sized roadster that is about 3 inches shorter than the BMW Z3. It comes with a standard manually folding convertible top that can be raised or lowered from the driver’s seat. The convertible top comes with a glass rear window with a defogger. A removable hardtop is optional.

Interior
The Miata is just 4 feet high, so occupants literally have to drop into the two snug-fitting bucket seats. A simple, functional dashboard places all gauges so they are easy to see and controls are within easy reach.

An optional Convenience Package includes a “windblocker” that mounts behind the seats to reduce turbulence.

Under the Hood
The only engine for the rear-drive Miata is a 140-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder. Regular models come with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions, and the Special Edition comes only with a six-speed manual.

Performance
The engine is rather loud, the ride is pretty stiff, and the Miata can’t keep pace with more performance-oriented sports cars. However, it is still fun to drive, reasonably priced and designed in classic sports car style. There was nothing else like it when it arrived as a 1990 model. Even with several other roadsters crowding the market, the Miata still stands out as a great value.

  • fun, reliable, drives like a go-cart!

If you are looking for great fun, economical maintenance costs and outstanding reliability this is the car for you. I had mine for ten years with only normal maintenance. Winding back roads in a Miata are where you will want to be.

  • Hard to find a more reliable and fun car.

Like taking the roller coaster to work!...but with enough comfort, storage, safety, etc. to be quite practical. I can feel like I'm going really fast but actually be obeying the traffic laws.

  • A much better car than I expected

At 66 years of age, I had been involved with performance/special interest cars for 50+ years. Finding my commute of 90 miles needed some enjoyment added, I bought the Miata used thinking of the earlier days of English and Italian sports cars and I learned how a modern sports car can be reliable and have creature comforts. A much better car than I expected-I can see why these cars have such a loyal following and stay up in value.

  • Most beautiful and fun car I have ever owned.

It is still amazing how meticulous every owner has kept this car. The original paint just dazzles and is near perfect. Tires and brakes at 32,000 miles. Solid feel, tight as new, and no strange noises.

  • My First sportscar

I got hooked to this car because of Gran Turismo 4 game Miata means "Reward" in old German language For 1 year it was an excellent car no major issues after I put that Car Alarm from Best Buy! Viper it kinda screwed up my electrical it shuts off itself after a stop light (it is said some this is common) So finally some research "99-00" models are prone in 3 major problems EGR! Coil Pack ($400) recently then second catalytic converter! but other than that the car works. So I taken the Viper alarm cause one time keeps alarming without stopping! drives me insane. These cars are meant to be garaged if you want it safe. The car rejects the alarm same with the Honda Del Sol, plus NON FACTORY alarm is a waste of money! spend something else It's a $600 worth w/c is a waste. bottom part it is hard to enjoy the car when it is not performing normally cause it drives but depending on the traffic from 15-45 mins if you're lucky! I recommend get a 5/6sp on these cause the Auto suck out the life of the experience!

  • Most fun car to drive

This is definitely the most fun car I have ever driven. I have driven a BMW convertible and while it has more power, it is just not as responsive and fun to drive. The Miata is also very low maintenance. I bought my Miata used with 117K miles on it. It now has over 210K miles and other than needing a new top, it is still going strong. I've had to replace the oxygen sensor, computer, EGR valve and fix a leak in the radiator. It's not the quietest or most comfortable car, but it makes driving fun.

  • Reliable, FUN, amazing design

My Miata has been the most reliable and fun car I have ever owned. I have had the car for many years, and have literally never had to spend money on repairs other than basic maintenance (brakes, tires, tune up, etc). The car gives you a feeling of being connected to the road. The steering is nimble, the ride is smooth, but you feel everything (odd combo). In true roadster fashion it turns heads and is a blast to drive and ride in. The gas mileage is not amazing considering, but not bad either. I probably average about 25MPG. Mine is a manual tranny, and shifting is a joy. I will probably always own a Miata. Once you own one, you become attached to it, and get used to the performance and reliability. Everyone should own one of these. Mazda has not radically changed the Miata over the decades, and there is good reason for that. They simply got it right. So why make drastic changes. A new Miata, although a bit sleeker, sexier, and more modern, is not all that different from one made in the 90s. And look around. You will still see tons of the 90s Miata models proudly being driven everyday. There is also a very loyal Miata following online, making it easy to find parts, accessories, tutorials, etc if you ever need it.

  • Great basic car with little creature comforts!

This is a cozy car with great handling and it's very easy to maintain. At interstate speeds it drones a lot and is kind of obnoxious. They rev to about 4,000 rpm around 70 or 75 mph. Gas mileage is good, but not great.

  • Best, Most Fun Car Ever!

This car is so much fun to drive. It's especially great after a rough day at work to go out to this car and drive her home! Even after the worst of days, it always brought a smile to my face. I have owned mine for 15 years. I bought it used when it was 2 years old and think it was the best bargain I've ever gotten. I've never had any major trouble with it.
