Expert 2009 Volvo XC90 review

Vehicle Overview
This midsize luxury SUV has an available V-8 and seating for up to seven. Trim levels include 3.2 and 3.2 R-Design (a new sporty trim), as well as V8 and V8 R-Design. All-wheel drive is standard on the V8 and V8 R-Design, and it’s optional on the six-cylinder. Competitors include the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Cadillac SRX.

New for 2009
The XC90 is now available with an R-Design appearance package on some models. A new optional Executive Package (on V-8 models) adds premium leather and heated front and rear seats, plus ventilation and massaging functions for the front seats.

Exterior
The XC90 carries Volvo’s familiar face — not the boxy angles of yore, but the smoother, friendlier look that’s been present since the early 2000s. Door handles and side mirrors are body-colored, and the mirrors incorporate turn signals. The roof rails are trimmed in black or aluminum. R-Design trims change the look of the grille and add rear skidplates. The V8 trim adds twin dual exhaust pipes.

The vehicle is 189.3 inches long and 74.7 inches wide. It’s the shortest of its competitors and, with the exception of the SRX, is also the narrowest.

  • Available 18-, 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Standard front fog lights
  • Standard power heated mirrors with turn signals
  • Standard power moonroof (optional on base 3.2)
  • Optional headlight washers
  • Optional bi-xenon headlights with articulating lenses

Interior
The dashboard and instrument panel dome employ slanted, angular themes, as does a three-spoke steering wheel with audio and cruise controls. Various console knobs have chrome coverings, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror is now standard. The XC90 seats five people in two rows. An optional third row bumps capacity up to seven, but it’s a tight squeeze in back (Volvo recommends the third row for occupants 5 feet, 3 inches or shorter). A built-in child-safety seat in the second row adjusts forward up to 12 inches to keep children closer to adults up front.

Passenger volume comes in at 102.4 cubic feet — the same as the X5. Cargo volume behind the third row is 8.8 cubic feet. The rear seats fold down, as does the front passenger seat. With all seats stowed, maximum cargo volume measures 93.2 cubic feet, which is the best of the group.

  • Available cloth, leather or premium leather seating
  • Available aluminum or real wood trim
  • Standard automatic dual-zone climate control
  • Standard audio and cruise controls on steering wheel
  • Optional heated front seats
  • Optional 650-watt, 12-speaker audio system
  • Optional dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system
  • Optional navigation system with real-time traffic

Under the Hood
The XC90 has two powertrain offerings, including a rare-for-Volvo V-8. When properly equipped, the XC90 can tow up to 4,960 pounds. R-Design models get a sport-tuned suspension with thicker front/rear stabilizer bars and firmer springs and struts.

  • 235-horsepower, 3.2-liter six-cylinder with 236 pounds-feet of torque
  • 311-hp, 4.4-liter V-8 with 325 pounds-feet of torque
  • Available front- or all-wheel-drive systems
  • Standard six-speed automatic with manual shift functionality
  • Standard self-leveling rear suspension (optional on base 3.2)
  • Standard speed-sensitive power steering (optional on base 3.2)

Safety
Offering unmatched safety in its segment, the XC90 comes loaded with safety features. One notable feature, especially on an SUV, is the standard Roll Stability Control, which attempts to stop a rollover once it’s started by cutting torque and applying individual brakes. There’s also a lower frontcross member that provides for safer SUV-to-car impacts.

  • Standard front, side and side curtain airbags
  • Standard antilock braking system with brake assist
  • Standard electronic stability and traction control
  • Optional rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Optional blind spot information system

The car looked great when i viewed it the first time and felt ok when i test drove it for a few miles and after purchase all types of warning lights came on including the check engine light. The make and model of the car is good, i just feel like the dealership did not disclose all the issues and tricked me into buying it

  • The 2009 Volvo XC90: Comfort, Luxury, Versatility

I purchased my 2009 Volvo XC90 last year to serve the purpose of a comfortable commuter car, and considering I payed next to nothing for the vehicle itself, my expectations weren't too high. However, after only owning the vehicle for a very short time, I found myself thoroughly impressed with the car. It became apparent to me that Volvo built their cars with a different mindset then their german rivals, as none of the features that my Volvo was equipped with were revolutionary for the time: heated seats, automatic climate, rear seat entertainment, etc. All very nice options to have, but they could be just as easily had on an X5. However, getting behind the driver's seat of the Volvo is completely different from a BMW or Audi, as the car feels just as heavy as it is. Rather than trying to mask the weight of the car, Volvo chose the path of embracing it - and it worked. Driving the XC90 is like driving a comfortable, leather-lined tank: it's confidence inspiring not in terms of speed, but road presence. To sum it up, I would absolutely recommend the XC90 to anyone in the market for a quality used SUV, as Swedish engineering proved itself to be a pleasant surprise to a German-biased individual such as myself.

  • Most reliable car I've ever owned.

Most cargo space in any vehicle I've owned. Not known for its performance but, has exceeded expectations for familial needs. The third row is perfect for when family or friends are in town or your children's friends need to come along.

  • Great Family SUV

We loved this truck. It was great and never down. Sure it is heavy and under-powered, but it was safe and reliable like a labrador retriever.

  • Safe, Reliable SUV

This car is safe and very well built. It handles well and is very reliable. It could be a little lighter as its a heavy car but the 3.2L engine is more than capable of getting up and going. It rides smooth and is roomy inside.

  • I love my Volvo

I have owned Volvo?s for 40 years and this is the first XC90. It is a great car to drive. The only problems with this car is the transmission. It is a sealed unit so they say it can?t be serviced but it can. Most transmission shops will do it. If you have regular service, it will last a long time. I love my XC90 and take it everywhere, even off-road.

  • One of the safest trucks you can buy

I owned a 2009 XC90 3.2L V6 from 2012 to 2014. I made a mistake buying it, but by that I mean I rushed into it as I had to get a car very fast due to selling my previous car. My version was the R-Design and unless you get the V8 version, stay away from it. It has the styling, yes, but the 3.2L 235 HP is NOT enough to move the 4700 lbs with authority. The last thing you want it any car is to be underpowered. It can be dangerous when you can't merge quickly enough or get out of the way quickly enough. For around town, sure, it's fine, but for a one-car family, this is not the one to get. However, and this is VERY important. This engine (3.2) is the best to get IF you want a V6. Whatever you do, do NOT buy the 2.5L Turbo engine in the T6 model. The transmission matched to that motor is a total piece of crap (google it) whereas the transmission in the 4.4L V8 or 3.2L V6 are perfectly fine. Just do not get the T6 or you'll spend more for a new transmission than it probably cost you to buy an old XC90 SUV. Pros are extreme safety as is Volvo's ethos. They have skimped on nothing. The roof is made of a material called Boron which is incredibly tough and will protect you even if the vehicle should roll over. Speaking of rolling over, this was the first vehicle in the world with an onboard gyroscope to measure angles, weight etc in an evasive maneuver situation to help the vehicle to avoid ending up on its side or roof. Reliability was so-so for me. Nothing to really mention except I needed three wheel bearings at the same time at the tune of $1500 total. Thankfully the CPO warranty covered it but that's something to keep in mind. Parts are not cheap for this car.
