An MDX prototype (above) met the public at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, so it’s no surprise that we’ll get to see the production model in New York. Honda says the 2014 MDX uses a totally new platform and that the third generation of the seven-passenger crossover is longer than its predecessor. The automaker claims that the new MDX will be roomier, more comfortable and have a more versatile cabin than the outgoing model.

Front- and all-wheel drive will be available and power comes from a new 3.5-liter V-6 with direct injection and a cylinder deactivation feature to shut down cylinders for increased fuel economy. The all-wheel-drive-only outgoing model uses a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6.

Interior features of the 2014 MDX include the next generation of Acura’s multimedia system featuring Pandora, text messaging and the cloud-based Aha application. The crossover also will be available with a full suite of safety systems, including forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, a multi-angle rearview camera as well as lane keep assist and active cruise control.

Stealing just a bit of the MDX’s spotlight at the show is the refreshed 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan. It was redesigned for model-year 2011 and for 2014 gets “some innovative new features,” the automaker said in a statement. Check back with us during the New York Auto Show’s press days March 27-28 for more information.
