Sex sells and Mercedes-Benz’s curvaceous attempt at an entry-level car has people buying.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 took the top spot on our Movers list for September, selling on average in just three days, a remarkable number. Mercedes reported on Tuesday that in a single week of sales in September the company sold 2,310 units of the CLA-Class. If the company keeps up that pace of sales, the CLA would be its best-selling model in October. You can read our review of the new sedan here.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: September 2013

Redesigned and all-new models are typical entries on the Movers list, and the redesigned Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 make appearances. But 2014 versions of tried-and-true nameplates such as the Honda Accord and Subaru Forester also appear on the list.

The Losers list is made up entirely of 2013 models as most automakers have made the transition to 2014s. Volkswagen has been hit especially hard as the new family of 2015 Golf hatchbacks is many months from going on sale in the U.S. The 2014 Golf models see little changed and are just now arriving at dealerships, leaving the old 2013 versions to sit around waiting for buyers. We did select two Golfs in our picks for folks who appreciate the current model’s exceptional fit and finish.

Another pick is the 2013 Hyundai Azera, which came in a respectable third place in our recent $38,000 Full-Size Sedan Challenge.

New 2013 and 2014 models took an average of 69 days to sell, which is a significant increase from August’s 62 days. September 2012’s number was 65 days.

More 2013 models were competing with their 2014 brethren on lots, impacting the average. 2014 models sold on average in less than 20 days and 2013 models in 105 days.

About the Lists

The Fastest- and Slowest-Selling Cars list reports the average number of days it takes to sell models from the day they arrive on the lot until the final paperwork is signed by a buyer. This is not a days-of-inventory list like you may find on other websites. We look at 2013 and a number of 2014s now, calling the fastest sellers Movers and the slowest ones Losers.

For Movers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, ultra-high-performance cars and others that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. To highlight all slow sellers, losers have no such threshold.

Our Picks highlight cars that take a significant time before they’re sold and might be overlooked by shoppers. Dealers could be more motivated to sell these cars.
