Competes with: BMW M4, Audi RS 5, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Looks like: A serious challenger to the crop of German high-performance coupes Drivetrain: 450-plus hp, 5.0-liter V-8 Hits dealerships: 2014
It’s been just a few months since Lexus debuted its all-new RC coupe but we now know what the high-performance F model looks like, if not all its specs. Like the IS F sedan, the new RC F is powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine, but where the IS F’s V-8 makes 416 horsepower, the RC F’s engine will produce “well above” 450 hp, according to the automaker.
The coupe’s exterior has undergone a performance-focused overhaul. It features air outlets in the taller hood and front fenders, a massive spindle grille with a mesh insert, stacked quad exhaust tips, available carbon fiber pieces and an available active rear spoiler. The spoiler motors up at about 50 mph but returns to its position flush with the trunk lid below 25 mph. Forged 19- inch aluminum wheels fill out the wheel wells, and the top-level rims are polished by hand.
The dashboard bears a strong resemblance to the recently redesigned IS sedan but there are a number of unique elements such as the thick-rimmed steering wheel and performance bucket seats. Lexus says the seats are “styled to resemble tight-fitting athletic sportswear and to offer similar levels of support.” So if you’re an Under Armour devotee, maybe you’ll like these seats.
The 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit is shaping up to be a performance-car bonanza with the debut of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe, VW Golf R and others in addition to the RC F. As we learn more about this high-powered Lexus, we’ll bring it to you here. For now, check out the photos below.
