2015 Acura TLX: Up Close

No surprises here: The 2015 TLX is nearly identical to the prototype Acura showed earlier this year. That’s a good thing, though, as this is Acura’s most cohesive car design in years.

The chrome bar in the shield grille still doesn’t look quite right to my eye, but I like how Acura has evolved its multi-element LED headlights; they’re thinner and sleeker than the ones on the Acura RLX flagship sedan.

The interior is generously trimmed in soft-touch materials, and the center control panel is heavy on technology with upper and lower screens, just like the RLX. Base four-cylinder models have a conventional gear selector, but the V-6 gets a push-button transmission. The push-button setup uses the same center console real estate as the traditional shifter, so it doesn’t free up any extra space.

The show car’s seats were finished in supple leather upholstery, and there’s adequate backseat legroom and good headroom.

The new TLX replaces two cars in Acura’s lineup, the compact TSX and midsize TL. It does an admirable job melding the two models by retaining an efficiency-minded four-cylinder version and a high-powered V-6 model with all-wheel drive for performance enthusiasts. A trim exterior and upscale interior should position it well against midsize sedans from Lexus, Lincoln and others.
