Jaguar Land Rover has a plan to offer a diesel engine in just about every one of its cars and SUVs in the not-so-distant future. Here’s the kicker: that plan includes North America, where diesel offerings are still limited compared to what’s available overseas. Land Rover’s diesel love fest in North America will start this fall with the recently announced 2016 Range Rover Td6 and Range Rover Sport Td6, boasting 32 percent improved efficiency compared to the base supercharged V-6.

In the Jaguar camp, a diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder will find its way into the highly anticipated entry-level XE luxury sedan when it launches stateside in 2016; the XE is Jaguar’s BMW 3 Series/Audi A4/Lexus IS/Cadillac ATS fighter. Jaguar Land Rover North America’s President and CEO Joe Eberhardt says to expect the diesel XE’s highway fuel economy to fall in the “40-something” range, he remarked at a briefing of future product at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

An above-40-mpg-highway rating would make the diesel-powered XE one of the most efficient offerings in today’s segment — right up there with the diesel-powered BMW 328d’s impressive 32/45/37 mpg city/highway/combined ratings. We expect more diesel news from Jaguar Land Rover in the future, but here’s one headline you won’t see, “Jaguar Introduces Diesel-Powered F-Type.” Eberhardt said all products except the F-Type will eventually offer a diesel engine
