Mazda’s tiny new SUV is EPA rated at 35 mpg on the highway, besting all others in the subcompact SUV class. Front-wheel-drive versions of the 2016 Mazda CX-3 have an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 29/35/31 mpg city/highway/combined. That bests the Chevrolet Trax (26/34/29), Jeep Renegade (24/31/27), Fiat 500X (25/34/28) and the Honda HR-V (28/35/31).
The new CX-3 gets power from a 146-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. All-wheel-drive versions are EPA-rated at 27/32/29 mpg.
The 2016 Mazda CX-3 will go on sale in late summer; prices have not yet been announced.
