CARS.COM — The 2016 Porsche 911 R takes its name from the first racecar to bear the moniker nearly 50 years ago. But while the name may be nearly a half-century old, the thrill of taking turns on the track at breakneck speeds in a high-performance sports car is timeless. As such, Porsche says it tried to retain a classic look with the 911 R, which is on display at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
Its exterior styling resembles the 911 Carrera, with front and rear body elements inspired by the 911 GT3, with which it shares an engine. The 911 R, however, eschews the GT3’s large fixed rear spoiler in favor of an automatically deployed one, along with a sport exhaust system. Dual, wide-set racing stripes spanning the center of the car reach from the very front all the way to the back — almost as if to maintain a well-defined line to the past.
