CARS.COM — After skipping model-year 2016, Audi’s three-row SUV is back with all-new styling and top safety scores. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2017 Audi Q7 a Top Safety Pick Plus, its highest designation.

The Q7 aced the IIHS’ tests, earning good ratings in all five crash tests small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints as well as a superior rating for its standard front crash prevention system. The previous-generation Q7 did not undergo the small front overlap test, and a front crash prevent system was not available.

The agency recently made earning its awards tougher; starting this year, vehicles can only earn Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus status if they achieve good ratings in all five crash tests and have an available front crash prevention system. If the system is rated basic, the vehicle qualifies for Top Safety Pick. Top Safety Pick Plus vehicles must have systems that are rated advanced or superior.
