CARS.COM — The seventh generation of the tastemaking BWW 5 Series luxury sedan is set to debut Jan. 9 at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Joining the 2017 540i will be its high-performance M and plug-in hybrid incarnations, the M550i xDrive and 530e iPerformance.

In all three models, BMW promises enhanced performance and design, “the most advanced personal driver connectivity available,” and features including optional gesture control, a new head-up display, remote 3-D view and improved voice control. Meanwhile, the automaker continues edging toward the era of fully self-driving cars with the inclusion of remote control parking and advanced driver assistance systems.

BMW says the new 5 Series is as much as 137 pounds lighter than the outgoing model thanks to the use of magnesium, aluminum and high-strength steel in its architecture. The 540i xDrive is equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that makes a 12 percent-improved 335 horsepower and 332 pounds-feet of torque, boasting a zero-to-60-mph sprint of 4.7 seconds on its way to a 155-mph top speed. The M550i xDrive ups the ante with an eight-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that makes 456 hp and 480 pounds-feet of torque, and goes zero-to-60 mph in an estimated 4.0 seconds.

The 530e iPerformance combines BMW’s eDrive electric system with a four-cylinder gas engine that produces 248 hp and 310 pounds-feet of torque, gets up to 60 mph in an estimated 6.2 seconds and can be driven on electricity for up to 15 miles. The 530e iPerformance joins BMW’s growing lineup of plug-in electric hybrids, including the 330e iPerformance, 740e xDrive iPerformance and X5 xDrive40e iPerformance, and the i3 and i8.

The regular 5 Series sedan is set to arrive in showrooms in February, followed by the M Performance and iPerformance versions in the spring; pricing will be announced closer to launch.
