CARS.COM — The 2017 Honda Civic Type R hot hatch will start at $34,775 with destination, according to an eagle-eyed Honda fan who spotted window stickers being applied to a lot full of the cars on the dock at the port of Baltimore and posted photos on the site CivicX.com.
That puts the Type R, unveiled in U.S. form in March, about $2,000 less than 2017 rivals such as the Ford Focus RS ($36,995 to start; all prices include destination), Volkswagen Golf R ($36,475) and Subaru WRX STI ($36,015). The Civic Type R is front-wheel-drive only, however, versus power to the ground through all four wheels for the others.
The Type R is built in the U.K. and has been available in Europe previously, but the newest version, based on the redesigned 2017 Civic hatchback, is being brought to the USA for the first time. The hottest Civic is powered by a 306-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 295 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual only.
