CARS.COM — Call it a soft opening for the hardtop. At a preview event for the 2016 New York International Auto Show, which kicks off today in Manhattan with media days, Mazda revealed the latest retractable hardtop incarnation of its iconic roadster. But the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF Retractable Hardtop isn’t just a reissue of the latest version of the ‘vert.
This “retractable fastback,” as the RF connotes, doesn’t stow its retracted top entirely like the previous version. Instead, it leaves the rear pillars up behind the occupants’ heads for an entirely new shape. While we immediately think “red” when we think of the Miata, the gunmetal paint job on the RF highlights the car’s bulletlike sleekness, and complements the reddish leather seats and contrast stitching on the steering wheel.
