Hits dealerships: Early 2017

CARS.COM — The proliferation of models continues at Mercedes-Benz, and the latest offering is the new GLC-Class Coupe, which makes its debut on the eve of the 2016 New York International Auto Show. The GLC Coupe is based on the GLC compact SUV, but it features a fastback roofline that emphasizes style over utility. It’s scheduled to arrive at Mercedes dealerships in early 2017 and initially will be offered in GLC300 and GLC43 AMG form. Both versions have standard all-wheel drive.

Exterior

Longer and lower than the regular GLC SUV, the GLC Coupe looks less like an SUV and more like a car with its sloping roofline and low stance. It also gets a unique grille that features diamond pins, a single crossbar and a large three-pointed star. Not surprisingly, it looks a lot like the grilles that Mercedes uses on its real coupes.

The GLC Coupe has LED taillights, and LED headlights are optional. The standard alloy wheels measure 19 inches in diameter but wheels as large as 21 inches are available. A power liftgate, power-folding side mirrors and a sunroof are standard. A foot-activated liftgate, which opens automatically when you kick your foot under the rear bumper, is optional.

Interior

The GLC Coupe features the same interior design theme as the GLC SUV. Signature cues include round air vents, a curved trim panel leading from the middle of the dashboard to the center console and a high-mounted multimedia screen that comes in standard 7-inch or optional 8.4-inch sizes.

Standard features include keyless start, simulated leather upholstery and a power-adjustable driver’s seat with a memory feature. Options include heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a simulated leather dashboard, ambient lighting and a head-up display.

Under the Hood

The GLC300 is powered by a 241-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that drives all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. An off-road suspension is standard, and an adaptive air suspension with adjustable ride height is available.

The GLC43 AMG uses a 362-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that also teams with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The GLC43 AMG has a sport suspension and a performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system with a rear-biased torque split of 31:69, front-to-rear. Mercedes says the GLC43 AMG can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

Safety

Standard features include a backup camera, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and a driver-drowsiness monitor. Adaptive cruise control with steering assistance is optional.
