CARS.COM — Volkswagen is adding a fast family hauler to its lineup with the 2018 Passat GT, first revealed at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The production Passat GT is nearly indistinguishable from the concept version that appeared in Los Angeles in 2016. Sporty accents like black mirror caps and a black roof combine with a red-outlined grille and slightly lowered suspension. A 3.6-liter V-6 making 280 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque makes sure the accents aren’t just for show.
In a world of Toyota Camry XSEs and Ford Fusion Sports (how much longer the latter will remain is up in the air), Volkswagen thought it important to throw its hat into the ring of performance-oriented mid-size sedans.
We’ll have to wait to find out how it drives and compares to the others in its class, but we won’t ever complain about any manufacturer that wants to make its cars a little bit more fun to drive.
