With Jeep recently announcing the permanent idling of its Belvidere, Ill., assembly plant, the Cherokee’s future is in limbo. However, the brand is making light updates to the model for 2023 that shuffle some equipment while also introducing an all-new Altitude Lux trim.

A notable change for the 2023 Cherokee lineup is that it’s now reduced to just two trims: the aforementioned Altitude Lux and the rugged Trailhawk. The Altitude Lux adds more high-end equipment to the SUV, coming standard with LED lighting, 17-inch gloss-black aluminum wheels, heated Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and black interior and exterior accents.

The Trailhawk continues to be the range-topping trim and retains its impressive suite of rugged off-road-focused performance upgrades. It also sees newly standard automatic high beams, a security alarm, a universal garage door opener and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Both trims now come with a standard 8.4-inch touchscreen display with navigation, as well as standard adaptive cruise control, front and rear park assist with automatic rear braking, and parallel and perpendicular park assist.

In terms of performance, Altitude Lux variants get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 180 horsepower, while the Trailhawk comes with a 270-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder; the previously offered V-6 is no longer available. Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive is standard. The Altitude Lux trim achieves an EPA-rated 21/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined, while the Trailhawk gets 20/26/22 mpg.

Pricing and Release Date

Jeep has not yet released pricing for the 2023 Cherokee, nor has it revealed when the 2023 model will begin rolling out to showrooms. However, the slimmed-down trim lineup will likely have a noticeable effect on pricing, especially with the Altitude Lux becoming the new base trim.
