2023 Toyota Crown Crowned With Top Safety Pick+ Award
The 2023 Toyota Crown hybrid sedan has scored top marks in safety tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, ensuring it receives the agency’s highest honor: Top Safety Pick+.

The Top Safety Pick+ award means the Crown did more than just earn the highest rating of good in a demanding round of physical crash tests, which include the driver-side small overlap front crash test that simulates what might occur if a vehicle hits something like a tree or utility pole. It also earned good ratings in the passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap front and updated side tests. The Crown also earned ratings of good or acceptable for the effectiveness of its headlights; the LED projector headlights that come on the Limited and Platinum trims earned a good rating, while the headlights that come standard on the XLE earned an acceptable rating.
Also worked into every IIHS safety rating is the accuracy of a vehicle’s automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian detection. The Crown’s front crash prevention system achieved superior ratings in both the daytime and nighttime pedestrian tests.
This safety score is another feather in the cap of the Crown, which is new for the 2023 model year and serves as the replacement to the Avalon full-size sedan. With its raised ride height, chunky exterior design and standard all-wheel drive, the Crown is a quirky mix of a traditional sedan with SUV styling cues. Available with a choice of two four-cylinder hybrid powertrains, we found the Crown to be both fuel-efficient and quick whenever speedy acceleration is needed.
