Riding on an all-new platform with its new six-cylinder engine, the Mazda CX-90 is a bold move. We’ve found much to like about the luxurious three-row SUV, and now the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found even more. The 2024 CX-90 and CX-90 plug-in hybrid have both earned the institute’s highest honor for crash protection: the Top Safety Pick+ award.

To earn the Top Safety Pick+ award, vehicles must earn top marks in three frontal crash tests and a side-impact test. Acceptable- or good-rated headlights must be standard on all trim levels, and the vehicle’s front crash prevention system has to pass both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. IIHS tightened the criteria for its highest award this year, now requiring a good rating in the side-impact crash test.

The 2024 CX-90 and CX-90 PHEV earned superior ratings for their standard front crash prevention systems. Additionally, the S, S Premium and S Premium Plus variants have LED projector headlights that were rated good; other trims come with acceptable-rated headlights.

In the CX-90’s family-focused segment, the honor is almost a prerequisite: Model-year 2023 versions of the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder and Subaru Ascent have all earned the Top Safety Pick+ award. While model-year 2023 versions of Mazda’s 3, CX-30, CX-5, CX-50 and CX-9 are all on IIHS’s list of Top Safety Picks, the CX-90 is the brand’s first offering to earn IIHS’ highest award.
