Is the Mini Countryman SE All4 a Good SUV?

  • Depending on your priorities, yes. If you fancy the Mini brand’s bubbly, unorthodox styling and upscale touches — and you’re willing to pay for them — the all-electric Countryman SE All4 is an intriguing choice. If you’re more concerned about optimal driving range and value for the money, there are better options.

How Does the Mini Countryman SE All4 Compare With Other Subcompact SUVs?

  • Though the gas-engine Countryman competes with a variety of upscale subcompact SUVs such as the BMW X1, Mazda CX-30 Turbo and Volvo XC40, the SE All4’s primary competitors include the Hyundai Kona Electric, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Mercedes-EQ EQB and Volvo EX30. Though its 212-mile driving range trails almost all of its rivals, the electric Countryman delivers pleasingly zippy acceleration and Mini’s signature style.

What Is the 2025 Mini Countryman SE All4?

The SE All4 is the first all-electric version of the Mini Countryman, and it launched as part of the redesigned-for-2025 Countryman lineup. In place of the entry-level S All4 version’s 241-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or the performance-oriented John Cooper Works All4’s 312-hp variant of that same powerplant, the SE All4 is powered by a dual-motor electric powertrain that puts out 308 hp and 364 pounds-feet of torque. Unlike the previous-generation Countryman, all 2025 Countrymans come with all-wheel drive, hence the “All4” designation. And speaking of previous Countrymans, Mini offered SE versions in the past, but those were plug-in hybrids; the new Countryman lineup doesn’t currently offer one.

From the outside, the ‘25 SE is barely distinguishable from its S counterpart; bright yellow-green “S” badges and the lack of an exhaust pipe are the main tipoffs. At a recent Mini press event, I took a brief test drive in a Countryman SE All4 and gave its backseat and cargo area a quick once-over. (Per our ethics policy, Cars.com pays for its own airfare and lodging when attending such manufacturer-sponsored events.) I had nowhere near enough time to fully explore all of the features and details, but I got a good taste of things nonetheless. Though I haven’t yet driven a gas-engine 2025 Countryman for comparison, Cars.com Managing Editor Joe Bruzek did a full review of the JCW version; many of his impressions apply to the SE, as well.

How Does the Mini Countryman SE All4 Drive?

Acceleration is quick and smooth from a stop or at speed, and the accelerator pedal is easy to modulate. Mini claims a 5.4-second 0-60-mph time, which feels realistic based on my behind-the-wheel impressions. In the default “core” drive mode at least, there are piped-in artificial “motor” sounds that rise in pitch and intensity as ground speed increases. Some drivers may find the fake noise gimmicky, but I like it; it feels very “on brand” for Mini.

My short drive route unfortunately didn’t include any curvy, open roads for properly testing the SE’s cornering capabilities, but like Joe, I didn’t find the redesigned Countryman’s steering feel as crisp or communicative as I remember based on previous-generation Countrymans I’ve driven. The SE isn’t quite as nimble, either. Due to their heavy batteries, electric vehicles almost always weigh more than comparable gasoline-engine vehicles, and so it is here. Mini lists the SE’s curb weight at 4,588 pounds; that’s 811 pounds more than the base S trim and 752 pounds more than the JCW. Even so, the handling wasn’t unduly upset by the additional weight of the electric powertrain, at least in everyday driving. The SE’s heft is apparent in fast turns, but it’s mostly unnoticeable otherwise thanks in part to the zippy acceleration.

Beyond that, the Countryman SE’s overall vibe is pretty much the same as its gas-powered siblings. At 6 feet, 6 inches tall, I fit fine in the front seat, but I can’t fit in the backseat comfortably even with the front seats adjusted to fit an average-height adult. The Countryman shares much of its dashboard design and controls with the redesigned Hardtop and Convertible, and as Road Test Editor Brian Normile noted in his review of the Hardtop, the unorthodox control layout isn’t for everybody.

What Is the 2025 Mini Countryman SE All4’s Driving Range?

The EPA-estimated driving range of the Countryman SE All4 is 212 miles with the standard 18-inch wheels; choosing the available 19-inch wheels drops the range to 204 miles. Those numbers are underwhelming; most competitive EVs have driving ranges of around 250 miles, and some offer versions that crest 300 miles of range.

Mini says the 64.7-kilowatt-hour battery can be charged to full in around eight hours on a Level 2 charger, and from 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. These specs aren’t outstanding, but they are in the ballpark with most comparable EVs.

How Much Does the 2025 Mini Countryman SE All4 Cost?

The Mini Countryman SE All4 starts at $46,375, a premium of $6,300 over the $40,075 starting price of the gas-engine S All4 version (all prices include a $1,175 destination fee). That’s a significant price bump, but it’s less than the premiums other automakers charge for the all-electric variants of their gas-powered SUVs. My test vehicle was equipped with Iconic Trim ($3,200) and Comfort Package Max ($900) option groups, along with Parking Assistant Professional automated park assist ($250), for a bottom-line price of $50,725.

There are plenty of compelling electric SUVs available in that price range, but none of them quite match the Mini’s unique design character. For at least a few buyers, that character should trump the Countryman SE’s quirks and shortcomings.
