BMW Announces Updates for 5 Series, X6 and X7

As is its recent spring custom, BMW has announced a smattering of minor updates across its lineup. The brand mostly focused on its 5 Series sedan, although a couple of its SUVs see some peripheral benefits, as well. All of the following applies to vehicles built from March 2025.

Improved Range for i5
Most all-electric i5 sedans manufactured since March 2025 have a greater range than earlier builds thanks to silicon-carbide semiconductor components that are more efficient, more powerful and more temperature-resistant than the conventional silicon pieces they replace. Improved wheel bearings also reduce friction and rolling resistance, contributing to the range increases.
The new range estimates for the i5 eDrive40 and xDrive40 are as follows, with the change from before in parentheses (official EPA estimates are not yet available); range estimates for the i5 M60 are unchanged.
i5 eDrive40
- 19-inch wheels: 310 miles (+15)
- 20-inch wheels: 300 miles (+22)
- 21-inch wheels: 278 miles (+7)
i5 xDrive40
- 19-inch wheels: 278 miles (+12)
- 20-inch wheels: 272 miles (+10)
- 21-inch wheels: 259 miles (+11)
BMW also announced its official range estimate for the electric iX xDrive60 SUV on the standard 20-inch Aero wheels; it lands at 364 miles, or 23 miles farther than the electric vehicle manages on the available 21-inchers (official EPA estimates are not yet available). BMW notes that figure is also 7% higher than it had projected.
Plug-Ins Are Charged Up, Too
Stepping back from EVs to plug-in hybrids, BMW is also upgrading its PHEV charging hardware. The 550e xDrive, X5 xDrive50e and M5 can now handle up to 11 kilowatts of AC power. That’s up from 7.4 kW previously, which will meaningfully reduce charge time at home and on public Level 2 plugs.
In other tech news, Parking Assistant Professional automated parking is now standard on the X7 xDrive40i. The YouTube app is newly available for customers with BMW Operating System 9 and an active Digital Premium subscription, and the automaker has improved the map interface for drivers using BMW Operating System 8.5.

Colors and Wind
Frozen Portimao Blue is now available on the regular 5 Series (“Frozen” is BMW’s way of saying “matte”), and a new shade, Tanzanite Blue, is also available for the X6. The 5 Series and M5 both get two new two-tone leather options, as well: dark purple/gray and taupe/gray in the 5 Series and dark purple/black and taupe/teal in the M5.
Finally, in its endless quest to banish spare tires from trunks everywhere, BMW has made what it calls the Seal & Drive Tire Kit standard in the 5 Series. The kit is basically a fancy can of Fix-a-Flat that attaches to the hub of the wheel with a magnet and pin before inflating the tire with air and sealant. Once the tire is inflated, drivers can continue down the road with the kit remaining attached to the wheel, which will not look as cool as — but be far safer than — Roman chariot hub spikes.
