Chrysler’s new 200 midsize sedan and its sibling, the Dodge Avenger, will be the first Chrysler models to use a Fiat-sourced six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The cars hit dealerships late this year, but the dual-clutch transmission will be available later in the 2011 model year.

When it becomes available, the Fiat transmission will team with the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder (a V-6 is optional). At launch, the four-cylinder will be offered with either a four- or six-speed automatic. Chrysler said the dual-clutch transmission, which hasn’t been priced, will improve gas mileage, without providing specifics. With the conventional six-speed automatic transmission, Chrysler said the four-cylinder 200 is expected to get 20/31 mpg city/highway.

Dual-clutch transmissions are becoming increasingly prevalent in mainstream cars. Volkswagen uses its DSG transmission in a number of models, and Ford recently introduced its PowerShift transmission in the new Fiesta. If, as claimed, the Fiat dual-clutch transmission yields improved fuel economy it will be a boon for the cars as competitors like the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata have four-cylinder powertrains that are notably more efficient than what the 200 will have to start.
