CARS.COM — Owners of some Toyota and Lexus vehicles experienced blackouts of many of their multimedia, climate and audio controls because of a stream of bad data. The fix is in, according to Toyota, but owners will have to go to dealerships for it.
Certain model-year 2014-2016 Lexus vehicles and 2016 Toyota Land Cruisers were affected by the bad data stream. It effectively disabled the navigation system, audio and climate controls, as well as hands-free mobile phone functions.
The problem was caused because errant data was “broadcast by our traffic and weather data service provider [and] was not handled as expected by the microcomputer in the vehicle navigation head unit,” causing the system to restart repeatedly, according to Toyota.
The automaker said the data issue was found and fixed, but the correction requires a forced reset and clearing of the data. Toyota said owners facing these issues should visit their dealer for a complimentary reset and check of the system.
Editor’s note: This story was updated June 9 to clarify that the backup camera was not involved in the outage.
