Ford Vs. Chevy: A Rivalry for the Automotive Ages Rages On

It’s one of the most heated rivalries in the history of the automotive industry, if not the history of the U.S. itself. Ford versus Chevrolet is up there with Yankees versus Red Sox, Democrat versus Republican, Dallas Cowboys versus anyone, “Star Trek” versus “Star Wars.” The rivalry has spawned internet vitriol, crude unauthorized reproductions of a beloved comic strip character, ridiculous acronyms (Fix or Repair Daily, Can Hear Every Valve Yell) and probably a non-zero amount of actual violence.

How do the two brands actually compare, vehicle to vehicle? In three of’s recent comparison tests involving both automakers, Ford entries earned higher marks than the comparable Chevy. In our 2020 3-Row SUV Challenge, the 2020 Ford Explorer finished fourth in a field of seven, while the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse finished sixth. Our 2019 Mid-Size SUV Challenge saw a similar result, with the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer finishing fifth out of six competitors while the 2019 Ford Edge finished third. Our last test of full-size SUVs saw the then-new 2018 Ford Expedition win handily in a four-vehicle competition where the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe finished third.

The most heated debate between Ford and Chevrolet partisans is likely truck-related, with loyalists quoting sales figures like box scores, and things like horsepower figures and towing capacities like stats on the back of a baseball card. The all-new-for-2019 Silverado 1500 finished fourth out of five entrants in the most recent half-ton pickup truck test conducted by sister site, while the 2019 Ford F-150 finished second (the Silverado’s sibling, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500, won the competition).

The 2019 Silverado 3500, however, won the 2018 One-Ton Heavy Duty Truck Challenge, coming in first ahead of the second-place 2019 Ford F-350, and that was before the Silverado HD lineup was redesigned.’s comparison test of mid-size pickups last year included the new 2019 Ford Ranger, but we opted for a 2019 GMC Canyon instead of a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado. The Ford finished second out of four competitors while the GMC came in last place.

Comparisons of new cars from both automakers are difficult to make, as Ford is abandoning all but the Mustang in the U.S. while Chevrolet is in the process of culling some of its car offerings. But Mustang versus Camaro is probably the most passionate non-truck debate, and the last time we compared V-8 muscle cars in 2016, the Camaro SS won the challenge while the Ford Mustang GT finished last. Four years has changed both cars, however, particularly the Mustang.
