It’s been a while since Mazda redesigned its three-row SUV, and the CX-9 is showing its age, landing in the bottom of the pack in the last Cars.com $40,000 Three-Row SUV Challenge. Today Mazda announced it will unveil a new CX-9 at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The teaser image shows an exterior that is dramatically different while still remaining recognizable as the CX-9. Replacing the previous-gen’s more-rounded appearance is a sleek, bulletlike shape with sharp edges and a sinister gaze. It’s clear that designers were keen on trading in the previous version’s friendly demeanor for an angrier, aggressive attitude.

Details are slim but Mazda says the new CX-9 uses the automaker’s latest SkyActiv technology, and fuel economy gains are something the CX-9 desperately needs. The current model’s 17/24/19 mpg city/highway/combined EPA rating puts it at the bottom of the class in terms of fuel efficiency.

The new CX-9 will debut in L.A. Nov. 18. Stay tuned for more.
