The redesigned-for-2013 Ford Escape compact SUV received an overall score of four out of five stars, earning four stars in frontal testing, five in side crashes and four in rollover testing.

Two other compact crossovers also received overall scores of four out of five stars. The refreshed-for-2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport got fours across all areas of testing, and the new-for-2013 Mazda CX-5 got fours in all areas of testing except side-impact tests, where it scored a five.

Winning five stars overall are two new-for-2013 compacts: the Hyundai Elantra GT and the BMW 3 Series hybrid. The Elantra got fours in frontal and rollover crashes and a five in side-impact testing. The 3 Series hybrid earned five stars in all areas of testing except frontal crashes.

NHTSA plans to crash-test 54 vehicles for 2013 — 33 passenger cars, 16 SUVs, one van and four pickup trucks. The safety organization says these vehicles make up about 85% of the volume of new vehicles sold for the year.
