Travelers used to use Memorial Day weekend to kick off their summer travel plans, hitting the road in greater numbers nearly every year. With the current state of the country in the time of the coronavirus pandemic — travel restrictions, business and recreation area closures, social distancing and more — AAA predicts the number of travelers will set a record low since it began measuring travel volume in 2000. Meanwhile, Cars.com data indicates that those who do plan to hit the road are also planning to stay fairly close to home.

According to Cars.com survey data, 36% of Americans do plan to travel at some point during the coming holiday weekend, and of that number 75% are planning to do so by car. Most of those traveling by car are eschewing the more traditional lengthy family road trip for destinations within 100 miles of home — perhaps to a drive-in movie theater? — and keeping the trip length to a day trip or a single overnight. Visiting friends or family is the most popular plan, but many others are planning to visit beaches or state parks, or otherwise spend the weekend camping.

Despite the reduction in travel this coming holiday weekend, AAA is seeing signs of optimism from travelers as online bookings through AAA’s website have increased. Similar to the data already collected by Cars.com, AAA’s predictions for future travel include an increase in car travel and more local and regional destination choices.
