If you sit in traffic frequently during your commute, it’s aggravating enough that you probably don’t care where your city ranks among traffic-congested cities. If you do care, though, then TomTom has compiled a list of sophisticated data to pinpoint the 20 most traffic-burdened cities.
By aggregating speed data from its in-car navigation systems, TomTom can tell which urban areas have the heaviest, slowest-moving traffic. The GPS data from its Tele Atlas business system creates a map of drivers moving at 70% or less than the posted speed limit.
The surprising winner is Seattle, which had 43% of its roads congested. Rounding out the top five are Los Angeles, Chicago (where we have to drive), Montgomery County, Md., and San Francisco.
