Toyota, Lexus Debut Upcoming GR GT, LFA Concept Supercar Duo

The Toyota Supra is no more, but Toyota’s in-house performance sub-brand, Gazoo Racing, just debuted a new flagship sports car that looks more like a Supra than the BMW Z4-based fifth-generation car ever did. Called the GR GT and described by Toyota as a “road-legal race car,” it’s headed for production. Its all-electric Lexus stablemate, which resurrects the LFA name, will likely follow later.

What Are the Toyota GR GT’s Powertrain Specs and Dimensions?

Any similarity to past Toyota sports cars vanishes when the GR GT’s hood opens. It may look somewhat Supra, but it’s powered by an all-new engine: a dry-sump twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. With an electric motor incorporated into the rear-mounted eight-speed automatic transaxle — it’s a modern Toyota, so of course it’s a hybrid — the GR GT generates approximately 70% more power than the 2026 Supra. The automaker promises at least 641 hp and 627 pounds-feet of torque. Toyota isn’t talking acceleration times yet, but the company says it’s targeting a top speed of at least 199 mph.

Toyota says its three priorities in developing the two-seat coupe were a low center of gravity, a combination of low weight and high rigidity, and aerodynamic efficiency. Built on the automaker’s first-ever all-aluminum structure, the GR GT is clothed in body panels of carbon fiber and more aluminum that Toyota proudly says were shaped by aerodynamic needs first and aesthetic concerns second. It turns out that wind likes awfully pretty shapes.

At 189.8 inches long, the GR GT is around 2.5 inches longer than the Lexus LC, but its proportions are closer to those of the aspirational grand-touring car, the Ferrari 12Cilindri. The Toyota’s 47-inch height is not only lower than the Ferrari’s by nearly 4 inches, though, it’s almost as low as the 296 GTB’s 46.7 inches.

Toyota says it is working to keep the GR GT’s weight below 3,858 pounds, which will make it nearly 400 pounds lighter than the 12Cilindri; standard carbon-ceramic brakes contribute to the effort. With its engine positioned fully aft of the front-axle centerline and a rear transaxle, the GR GT carries only 45% of its weight on the front tires.

It’s not just the GR GT’s eight-cylinder engine that makes it not a Supra, however. When it goes on sale in late 2026 or early 2027, it is expected to carry a price tag well north of $300,000.

What We Know About the Lexus LFA Concept

Sans any internal-combustion componentry at all, the GR GT will basically have the electric GT market to itself in the form of the Lexus LFA. Resurrecting the name from Lexus’ last exotic coupe, the new LFA shares its underlying structure with the GR GT but replaces the twin-turbo hybrid V-8 with electric motors.

It’s the same car as we saw during Monterey Car Week this past summer, when it was simply called the Sport Concept — itself an evolution of the Electrified Sport Concept that Lexus apparently has not stopped playing with since 2021. Lexus isn’t sharing any details on the LFA just yet. Indeed, Lexus hasn’t even confirmed that it will enter production. But with production-car underpinnings and a name that finally says something other than “it’s just a concept,” it seems likely that this version is destined for the showroom. If it makes it, though, don’t expect it until a year or so after the GR GT goes on sale, and figure on a price tag closing in on half a million bucks.
