VW to Introduce 5-Seat Atlas Concept in New York
The Volkswagen Atlas is already very good, and one of our favorite parts of it is that spacious third-row — which can actually fit adults! But a third row isn’t a requirement for all car shoppers, especially those putting a premium on cargo room, so Volkswagen has developed a two-row version of the Atlas, which will debut in concept form at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Bumping the Atlas down to five seats is similar to the treatment that Lexus gave its LX 570 two-row, which debuted at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. In that case, the two-row version of the LX 570 came with a discount; we’re hoping that will be the case for the Atlas, as well.
It’s peculiar that the Atlas will debut in concept form in New York, as it doesn’t seem like such a change would warrant full concept treatment. We’ll keep an eye out for other changes that accompany the reduction in seating.

As for the details we do know: The two-row Atlas will also be built in Chattanooga, Tenn., alongside three-row versions of the Atlas as well as the Passat sedan. No word yet on pricing or when the two-row versions will go on sale, but when we know, you’ll know too.
