Wide, white zig-zagging lines are meant to draw drivers’ attention back to the road and give them pause as they cross bike or foot paths. The point is to disorient drivers into paying attention. And yes, you read that right.
The VDOT borrowed the idea from Australia and the U.K. It’s trying out the lines in 500-foot segments on a few different roads. The department will study those stretches of road to see if the lines help reduce speeding. If successful, the dirt-cheap program could catch on.
