Brett is amazing with communication, explaining the needed service and expected timeline, and is very knowledgeable on problems and what is needed. Sales have always been great to work with and the 1 star for Sunset Ford Dealership is based on the service manager. He is unreachable, refuses to talk to customers in the store, and sends the advisor to do his talking. He is difficult to reach and the easiest way is to show up and hope he will actually talk to you in person. After the recent visits, the service manager's customer service and attitude have lost the dealership a loyal, long-time multiple-car family.

Sunset Ford service dept.
Sunset Ford service dept. will lie to you and mislead you and then overcharge you for their service. I brought my truck to their service dept. to have the PCM programmed to a valve body I installed in my transmission and after several attempts of trying to get it to work they told me I needed a new transmission and wanted to charge me approx. $9,000. I could have had this done at a local transmission shop for half that price. My truck worked fine for 4 years and had an occasional funny shift at a certain RPM range which was annoying after 4 years, so I did a lot of research and replaced the valve body and lead frame. The only thing Sunset Ford was supposed to do was program the PCM to the new parts. They couldn't even get that right. Then they tell me I need a new transmission. I'm not buying it. Warning: Do not go to this dealership for service unless you want to get lied to and ripped off.

Dennis, you had your truck towed into us. It wouldn’t drive out of first gear. Your attempts to “repair” your transmission at home were unsuccessful which is why you towed it into us. We programed the PCM just as you requested per the Ford workshop manual procedures and your vehicle still did not drive correctly afterwards. With your authorization, we disassembled the transmission to find out what was going on to cause it not to go into gears 4,5,6 and found internal damage. We found the overdrive clutch piston seal leaking which caused the overdrive clutch to be partly applied. When that is partially applied, it will drastically wear all clutch material from clutches – which it did. Then we also found the direct forward and reverse clutches over heated. So, you might have been driving around town with this truck with an occasional funny shift issue prior to you making repairs at home, but as soon as you replaced the valve body and lead frame, the transmission ultimately revealed the root cause of failures that were lingering there for years. Simply programing the PCM by our staff would not cause all that metal damage and internal seals to fail in the transmission. That’s from years of wear and tear. We are sorry that your “online research” lead you to replacing those components at home without a successful resolution, but that is why we recommend customers bring their vehicle into us from the start and have a Ford trained certified technician look at it and provide you an accurate diagnosis and explanation of what is happening before throwing parts at it. The internet can’t evaluate specific situations like yours, and unfortunately the internet led you down the wrong path. Sorry this happened to you and we hope others may choose to be careful before guessing at repairs at home.
