Expert 2010 Kia Optima review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Kia’s midsize sedan, built from the same design as the Hyundai Sonata, is a lower-priced, lesser-equipped alternative to its Korean cousin and mainstays such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. A four-cylinder engine is standard, while a V-6 is optional.

New for 2010
Push-button start with a smart key is now standard on the sporty SX, V-6 models have a new blacked-out lower rear bumpers and an overhead interior light is standard on all trim levels.

Exterior
Optima received a new face last year that seems derivative of a lot of cars — the headlights look like a Camry’s, while the interplay between the grille and lights recalls a similar pattern on the Accord.

  • Sixteen-inch steel wheels come standard
  • Optional 16-inch alloy wheels or 17-inchers
  • Optional sport-tuned suspension, darker headlights, and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors

Interior
Optima’s gauges are framed inside three binnacles instead of a one-piece display. The stereo has an auxiliary jack for MP3 players, and a navigation system is optional.

  • Standard cloth seats
  • Optional leather seats
  • Optional push-button start
  • Custom leather seats and trim for SX models

Under the Hood
Both the Optima’s engines were upgraded last year. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 175 horsepower (13 more than previously), and the 2.7-liter V-6 makes 194 hp (a gain of nine).

  • Standard five-speed manual transmission
  • Optional five-speed automatic transmission

Safety
Safety features include:

  • Active head restraints
  • Side-impact airbags
  • Side curtain airbags for both rows
  • Standard antilock brakes
  • Standard electronic stability system
  • Standard traction control

  • The Car Died

The car died at 235000 miles. The gears locked up and the motor just shut down. I was told that I would need a new motor. REALLY! It was just 10 years old.

  • Test drove one...I would rather have a Sonata

My wife needed a new car and we were looking at the Kio Optima and the Hyundai Sonata. After test driving both, we went with the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. It's the same engine in each car so that doesn't make a difference. But, the Sonata is much more comfortable to drive and ride in.

  • My Friend

I got this for my first car in 2012, and I ended up luckily getting it for relatively cheap from a local dealer. I am currently selling it 2 years later, and I wanted to do justice to it. I love this vehicle, it is comfortable, easy to drive, and perfect for a first car. It may just be mine, but this is a car with personality, and it's one that is easy to love. The sound system is alright, but the AUX and USB inputs have been a blessing. The only negative point is that the transmission has a bit of a kickback sometimes when downshifting, but once you get used to handling the car it doesn't happen. I'll miss my car when I have to sell it, but I can't ever recommend it enough.

  • Great car for reliable, safe, cheap transportation

My family has owned a 2010 KIA Optima for almost 3 years and 40,000 miles - overall found it to be a safe, reliable vehicle that is fun to drive. Have not had a single issue (that wasn't induced by my teenagers). Mileage has been right around 30 mostly city with some highway. I only have two complaints - the digital readouts are red and very hard to see in direct sunlight and for those of us who are partially color-blind. Also, the speedometer goes to 160 MPH - so the typically used range is very small (this is the only thing in the car that is just plain stupid design - must have been a marketing decision.) Fine car for reliable, safe, cheap transportation.

  • The single worst new car I've ever driven

I'm 18, and when my parents started looking for a good, reliable car for my college career during my Sophomore year of high school, they somehow got swindled into buy this Korean version of a Pontiac Aztec. When we first got the car, I hadn't become the motor enthusiast that I am today, so I had no problems with it; no bias or anything, I liked it because it looked cool. However, once the vehicle started reaching around 50,000 miles about 6 months ago (We took it a lot on vacation because it got decent mpg) not only did minor things start to happen (like the interior trim peeling off after 2 months of owning it), but serious mechanical problems, such as the transmission jerking violently when stopping, breaks squealing, wheels flying off balance; I could go on and on. Owning this car has turned me into a full-blown Kia hater. I even get mad when I see one drive past me and think "That poor guy." Luckily, a dealership not too far away took it for 10k by some miracle. And we bought a Dodge Avenger which I absolutely love. I feel bad about ripping him off, but we were just glad to be rid of the thing. I am passionately anti-Kia, and for good reason.

  • Great car for the Money

First Kia Product I ever purchased and it was a good choice.Bought a used 2010 Optima with 42k in Nov 2011.Clean car fax and good paint.Found out after purchase that it was alot of glass in the trunk under the trunk mat.The rear bumper had been replaced and painted.I've driven the car for 7000 miles and the transmission has started to give a hard jerk when coming to a stop it does this once in awhile not all the time.I thought it was the brakes and I had all 4 rotors turned and new brakes placed on the rear but it continued.hopefully the warranty will cover this repair.

  • MPG not good

This has been a good car. I like it. But........How are people getting 35 mpg or more? I drive 30 miles a day. About 1 mile of that would be city with a few stop lights and low speeds. 29 miles of it is interstate highway, very flat, no hills. I drive the speed limit and am easy with my right foot. I can't get better than 26mpg. Yes I have a 2.4l 4cyl engine. My consistent average is 24mpg. In the times I have done lots of city driving it drops to the high teens. I had a 7 passenger GMC Envoy with 4.2 inline 6cyl that could get 27mpg cruising and 16-17mpg in the city. The minivan I own gets better gas mileage than this Kia. I don't get it? Mid size sedan with a 4cyl and it eats more gas than a big 'gas guzzler' SUV.
