Great all around, very BAD MPG

I bot the CX-9 Grand Touring Trim model and the family loves it but Mazda advertizes the gas mileage as 24 highway 17 city but it is REALLY 17 highway and 13-14 city. It's a shame how automobile companys STILL get away with unrealistic calculations of MPG very year.

Very comfortable, good handling, BAD MPGs

This SUV is comfortable and handles well. I love the seat, stereo, way it drives. However it is delivering 13.5pg with mostly around the town driving (I generally drive it without gunning or sudden stops). It gets maybe 17 mpgs on the highway. This would not bother me as much if it was not far below the reported 16-22 it is supposed to get per Mazda. We have put about 1500 miles on the car do far in 2 months of driving. Rear seats are easy to put up and down but easier acces might be nice- say a removable middle seat in the second row allowing pass through. The doors for the second row are also long and very heavy meaning my kids have trouble opening and closing them without assistance and the doors are so long it makes getting out of the back seat in a parking lot quite a challenge without hitting the car beside you. All in all a lot funner to drive than a minivan but not sure it meets the needs of my family. Not sure about reliability yet- no problems so far but it's only been 2 months.

Right Combination of Features

We bought the CX-9 about two months ago after comparing to Highlander, Pilot, Durango, MDX and other three-seat crossovers. It wasn't even on our radar to start out with, but the CX-9 won because of it's great acceleration (much better than Pilot), third-seat comfort (much better than Highlander), cargo space (also much better than Highlander) and price (cheaper than MDX). We are a family of five moving from a mini van into a this car, so longer trips are a squeeze, which we knew going in. We are adding a roof rack to take care of our extras. Day-to-day running around is great and it's very fun to drive with an awesome stereo system (Way better than my husband's new Durango). Leather interior is luxurious and seats are very comfortable. I'm very pleased with how it handles in the snow, which was one of the major reasons I wanted an AWD car. Gas mileage is as advertised at around 16 MPG in town, but only after I altered my driving habits with help of the current average MPG display. Bluetooth phone works well, but it does not import contacts for your phone so you have to reprogram frequently called numbers. Bit of a bummer, but not a deal breaker by any means. I love this car and I'm glad we found it!!

The More I Drive It, the More I Love It

This car was a great buy. I love the style (not boxy) and it handles extremely well. The 6cyl. engine gives it the power to accelerate in heavy traffic, and the all wheel drive keeps the driving smooth and in control in any condition. It drives as easily and smoothly as a car, while giving you the size and look of an SUV The third row seat is wider (seats two) and more comfortable than all of the other mid-sized SUVs, except the Chevrolet Traverse. While the third row headroom is not quite high enough for an adult over six feet tall, it is enough for anyone under six feet, or for my pre-teen boys to sit comfortably. The leg room is better than all of the other SUVs, but it was the reliability that got me to choose it over the Traverse. The car has minor drawbacks that do not affect its performance or value. If I could make any recommendations to Mazda, it would be to add full-time driving lights on the light switch and to add low-mounted fog lights. In addition, the console controls for the radio and the heater are too close and almost blend into each other, so it makes finding the right button a bit distracting and time-consuming. Overall, it is a great value and a well-built SUV. Do your homework on the price (use Cars.com and Edmunds.com) and you will not have any buyer's remorse.

Gr8 Car

My 13 year old 4Runner was dying and I needed another SUV/Crossover. Also decided I no longer needed 3 cars (Infinity M45 Sport and Mazda Miata) so I traded 4Runner and M45 in for a new CX9. Couldn;t be happier as I now have the best of both worlds - an AWD Crossover that looks great, has some cool toys, is comfortable, fun to drive and has more cargo room than the 4Runner. Oh yeah - and gets better mileage than either one of the other vehilcles. The ride is very firm and secure with very little body sway, the two tone leather upolstery is gorgeous, instrumentation a good anf the Bose stereo system that plays (anmd controls) my music library on my Droid phone via Bluetooth is just awesome! This car does not disappoint at any level!

CX9 Mazda Grand Touring

One of the best cars I have driven, great gas mileage, very roomy, the only thing i wish they had was more room between the second and third row of seating and a bigger cargo area.

great value for the money

The mazda cx-9 is by far the best value out there for the money spent. We got a great deal on a 2012 and couldn't pass it up. The only drawbacks with the vehicle is that is doesn't match up with the mileage they say it will get, compared to the sticker. We took a long trip 2400 milkes when we first got the vehicle and could only get 21.6 mpg on dry, smooth roads with no wind for 100's of miles. Not sure how you could ever get 24 mpg as they claim on the sticker. Other discords are rough idle and somewhat sperratic downshift in the transmission. Other than that the ride is comfortable and smooth, handling is great and interior is roomy.

A Really nice Crossover

I recently got a brand new CX-9 in the Touring trim level to substitute our 2005 Mazda MPV. I took it on a road trip to North Carolina the next day with my three people family and it worked great. The exterior styling is certainly stylish. Both my son and wife loved it. The best thing was that the style didn't really compromise visibility from inside (Of course, the minivans of yore are much better in terms of visibility, giving a panoramic view of world from their giant windows). It looked a lot better than the Honda Pilot or almost any other competitor. The inside is just as nice, with piano black accents and decent looking plastics. The leather was of high quality too. The piano black accents did have a downside of being really glossy, as the piece around the shifter for the transmission got dirty and scratched really quickly. Also, the radio controls seem to collect fingerprints easily Most is the seats were comfortable, although the head restraints did protrude farther forward than I'm used to and they are a bit narrower than the seats in most other crossovers. The third row was a plain out uncomfortable though, with extremely limited space for adults. I would not want to stay there for long. If you are looking for a lot of third row space, get a minivan. The cargo area wasn't as large as I would expect from such a large vehicle either. With a high cargo floor and a sloping roofline in the back, the volume diminishes. Check out a car derived from the GM Lamba platform if you want more space ... or buy a minivan! Handling was great. Through the curvy roads in the Smoky Mountains, the car always felt secure. Acceleration was decent, but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be with the powerful 3.7 liter V-6 engine under the hood. The Toyota Highlander felt a lot more powerful and smooth. When I'm not carving corners, this crossover still behaves well. The interior has fairly low sound levels, with mostly muted wind and road noise. I did notice some wind noise coming from the side view mirrors. The ride is firm, as expected from a sporty vehicle. It got annoying sometimes over underfunded interstates. I imagine the ride quality would be even worse with the twenty inch wheels on the top-of-the-line Grand Touring trim level. The Toyota Highlander was a lot better in this regard. Overall, I was impressed. It works fantastically in nearly all areas. While it isn't as practical as my old minivan, it certainly is an upgrade and is a solid competitor in the mid-size crossover category.
