Expert 2018 Mazda Mazda6 review

our expert's take

Mazda tweaked its flagship sedan for the 2017 model year. For 2018, Mazda is making a good thing even better with a light update to the Mazda6 — just in time as rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are redesigned for 2018. It features a luxurious new top trim, the Signature model, along with lightly revised styling and a new engine option.

Exterior
Changes to the Mazda6’s exterior are light; the sedan’s signature chiseled body and swooping curves return anchored by a pumped-up grille with studded accents and a more creased front bumper. Slimmer headlights that integrate more angular slitlike foglights round out the Mazda6’s dynamic face. Mazda says there’s new 17- and 19-inch wheel designs and a new color — Soul Red Crystal — joins the lineup.

Interior
Like its CX-9 and CX-5 siblings before it, the sedan’s interior got an upgrade. Mazda says the interior is all-new, and that only the steering wheel and some trim pieces carry over from the previous model year. One big change is the control panel’s stretched, horizontal design. Cabin materials also look upscale; on top Signature models, premium Japanese Sen wood trim and Nappa leather adorn the cabin. Other new highlights of the cabin include an updated Mazda Connect multimedia display that uses sharper color contrast, a 360-view camera and a reconfigurable 7-inch thin-film-transistor display; optional ventilated seats are also newly available for 2018.

Mazda also redesigned the sedan’s front seats; the automaker says they’re wider and use high-density, vibration-absorbing urethane foam for a firm but supportive feel. The automaker claims the seats are designed to help keep front occupants’ spines in the body’s natural standing S-shape.

Under the Hood
Much is changed under the hood. The Mazda6’s current engine gets an update and a new turbo joins the lineup.

The current 2.5-liter four-cylinder now features cylinder deactivation, which will allow it to run on fewer cylinders under light loads for better gas mileage. Fuel-economy estimates have not yet been released, however. Mazda says the six-speed automatic also has been updated to ensure the transition between four- and two-cylinder mode is imperceptible.

New for 2018 and available on higher trim levels is the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, borrowed from the CX-9 SUV. In both the sedan and SUV, it makes 250 horsepower on premium fuel, 227 hp on regular unleaded gas. It too will pair with the six-speed automatic transmission; a manual transmission is only available on non-turbo models.

Mazda said it also made a number of enhancements to the sedan’s suspension that should make for a smoother, quieter ride. The steering also has been updated, and Mazda says it should be more responsive and have a more direct feel.

Safety
The Mazda6’s i-ActivSense suite of safety features carry over to 2018; they include lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beams, distance-keeping cruise control and autonomous safety braking support. Also new is adaptive cruise control that can bring the sedan to a complete stop then accelerate back up to the set speed once traffic clears.

  • One of the best driving experiences.

One of the best driving experiences. Very comfortable, nice power and great looking car. If you put premium fuel in it you get and 20+ horsepower but you can drive on regular. Great option…..

  • Quality sporty car

Excellent fit and finish, nicely appointed interior, handles very well, can get up and go. Infotainment system is middling and it rides harshly on 19 inch tires. A good, fun cat overall

  • Love, love, love my 6

The looks, comfort, the driving experience, and how Mazda provides exceptional care for their customers. Gives me great comfort knowing they back their products. A majority of our friends and families now own mazdas and are just as thrilled. I am so satisfied, I've purchased a Mazda 3 for our main commuter and a CX5 will be within the next year to replace our GMC. Zoom zoom!! ❤

I am so pleased with the entire process. This car is amazingly beautiful, comfortable and plenty quick. The friendly service that I received from Stuart Mazda is a level 10. I would highly recommend this dealership.

  • First car I’ve loved in decades!

I haven’t enjoyed a car this much since my Lincoln Mark VIII LSC! The Soul Red on my Signature 6 still takes my breath away when the sun hits it and it just glows. The styling makes other cars look dull, and the interior is awesome with the Napa leather and Sen wood and ultra suede accents. The seats are great, one of the few cars I’ve ever owned that I don’t push all the way back (I’m 6’4” tall) and are firmly supportive without being overbolstered. Performance is great - the low end turbo boost is more like a V8 torque curve than most turbo 4s. I am going to have to budget for a few speeding tickets because it’s just so tempting to put it in sport mode or row the gearshift like a manual. And still I average 27 mpg in mixed driving! Favorite features - these are the best cooled seats I’ve ever sat in, put my daughter’s Tesla to shame. In seconds you feel a chill with the a/c on. The heated steering wheel is also very effective. I absolutely love the heads up display, especially the speed limit readout that apparently reads signs as it changes the moment you pass the sign. The active cruise is very good, ignored vehicles in other lanes quite well. Climate control is fine even in Texas summers which often top 110 F. The handling and ride are excellent - I find myself searching out twisty roads and exploring new detours on my way home. Shortcomings are mainly the infotainment system. The Bose stereo is great, but the slowness of the system to change modes is annoying. My last couple of cars had Ford Synch which just worked faster and more simply. But get real, I don’t buy a car for the navigation or Pandora, I got it to DRIVE! Besides, with Apple CarPlay it’s all in the phone anyway. I will probably change from the Falken tires to Michelin’s next 10K miles. Bottom line I still love the car with 20K miles now and still smile every time I open the garage door. Reliability has been fine, only routine scheduled service thus far. I will be adding an oil catch can at the next service, though, to reduce carbon buildup on the intake valves.

Sporty and very luxurious with the signature trim. The car looks better than most cars that are thousands of dollars more. Inside and out it is a beautiful vehicle, like no other.

  • This Grand Touring has Everything I Need

Everything about this car is perfect for me; the exterior style, the cabin's comfort, performance with the turbo/sports mode, sun roof, Bose Speakers, heated seats and all the other bells and whistles. My only complaints are that foreign cars don't have remote start (including this one), there was a tiny-tiny spot of rust where the paint got chipped and the windshield doesn't have tint at the top like most vehicles. My complaints are easy enough to fix, I'll put in an after market remote starter if I want, fix the spec of rust with a touch-up paint pen and have tint installed. Besides those minors things this car is amazing, it's fun to drive and extremely comfortable. You don't feel bumps im the road with this suspension! The paddle shifters are a nice plus and Mazda finally put a turbo in this car! If you are in manual-shift mode with sport mode on I think this car beats it's closest competition in 0-60 if that's a concern of yours. Also in my opinion the look and feel of the car destroys the competition! The leather stitching on the dashboard and leather seats is very premium. I would highly recommend you check out this vehicle, especially Grand Touring and on.

  • Worst Car I've Owned

The sales experience was fine when I purchased my 2018 Mazda 6 Signature new in December of 2018, however the car was in for service due to a warranty issue on 12/2/2019 with the rear seat chrome trim breaking, and the job was botched by the tech. The person broke the replacement pieces and wrinkled the leather. The car has 6,300 miles and garage kept. The build quality is inferior to the completion, and the run around we're receiving from Mazda and the dealership is a waste of our time. Please note, the car has several issues stemming from super thin paint that constantly and excessively chips as well as front door rattles and creaking noises. Not to mention, all four wheels were replaced due to black marks under the finish. I will NEVER buy another Mazda or give this dealership any future business or recommendations. The lack of business acumen from both parties is laughable, at best. Lesson learned.....

  • Nothing else comes close in this category

After being a long time VW and Honda family, our first thought was to go back to our old stand-by...thanks goodness we didn't! The Mazda styling looks great on the outside, and the overall fit and finish on the inside sealed the deal! The performance, room, and creature comforts are on a totally different level than the competition. If you haven't taken the time to check a Mazda out, you should, you won't be disappointed!

  • Good midsize car, but not a sports sedan

I have had the car for a couple of weeks and while the car is decent, but there are too many "gushy" (most of them appear fake) reviews for it out there claiming that it performs well. The 2.5L turbo engine is not satisfying to drive hard. It delivers too much torque at the start, spins the wheels, then just as you accelerate towards redline, it falls on its face at 4000 rpm. If you drive it normally, it is fine, but do not look for a rewarding experience if you push it hard. Plus hearing that buzzy 4-cylinder sound under load is another reason to take it easy on the gas pedal. The handling is just OK. It feels sharp and has good turn-in when you are tooling around town and initial impression is that it is more capable that it really is. Push it a little harder and it falls apart quickly due to what all is being asked of the front tires in this layout (ie turn, brake, steer). If a performance tire was used, it may handle better. So, those things aside, if you are looking for a good-looking commuter vehicle and don't drive your cars hard, then this is a good choice. It is nice to look at inside and out and is pretty comfortable. The tech is OK but the infotainment system is antiquated and sluggish at startup. I was on the fence about purchasing this or the Accord. I ultimately ruled out the Accord because I get weary of seeing so many of them on the road. If you are looking for a performance midsize car and can get past its over-styled looks (especially that uni-brow front chrome bar), then I suggest looking towards an Accord 2.0T.
