Expert 2010 Nissan Xterra review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Nissan’s truck-based Xterra is geared toward young, active buyers — or those who want to appear that way. A standard 4.0-liter V-6 drives either the rear or all four wheels. Unlike some SUVs, it’s a truly capable off-roader, with an available Off Road edition. The other trim levels are X, S and SE. Its competitors include the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

New for 2010
There are no significant changes to the 2010 Nissan Xterra.

Exterior
The Xterra’s styling is evolutionary, mimicking the original’s design heritage. The Xterra is defined by its standard tubular roof rack and stepped roofline. All Xterras have short front overhangs — the distance between the front of the wheel well and the front of the SUV — and this helps in off-road situations.

  • Optional running boards
  • Optional bodyside moldings
  • Roof-mounted off-road lights (Off Road)
  • Available 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels

Interior
Five people fit inside the Xterra. An optional fold-down front passenger seat that allows for hauling long items can accompany the SUV’s standard 60/40-split folding backseat. Options include an upgraded audio system and a system of rails in the cargo floor for lashing down items.

  • Remote keyless entry, cruise control and auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Double-deck glove box
  • Easy-to-clean floor
  • Available leather-appointed seating

Under the Hood
Nissan’s 4.0-liter V-6 is the only engine offered. It develops 261 horsepower and 281 pounds-feet of torque.

  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • Optional five-speed automatic transmission
  • Available part-time four-wheel drive
  • Double-wishbone front suspension and multi-leaf solid rear axle

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Electronic stability system
  • Antilock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution
  • Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows

  • LOVE MY 2010 Xterra

I bought mine back in 2010 brand new an absolutely love it, which they still made them. They need to bring them back but keep the same shape and the simple and easy inside, not make them look like mini vans on wheels or add a 3rd row seat. If they made them like the one I have now I would definital have one. LOVE MINE

  • The Xterra is the orange sherbert of SUVs

Yes, I said orange sherbert but hear me out! In the world of SUVs names like Jeep, Bronco, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser reign supreme. They're all pretty reliable, good price depreciation, and fun to drive...but i would argue the Xterra should at least be in the conversation. The Xterra is a great vehicle. It runs on the uber reliable and powerful Nissan 261hp 4.0 liter engine. Parts are pretty cheap. Its easy to work on. It's got great space and has got great mods available for it. It was basically built for fun. The design is boxy and outdated but also unique. I think if you can get past the name and not following the trend you'll likley be happy with this faithful companion. Yes its great to have Vanilla, Chocolate, and strawberry flavors but those get old after a while. The Xterra is fun, just like Orange Sherbert. you're not winning any michelin stars with it but you are guaranteed to have a good time.

  • Mechanically a Great Vehicle !!

Only had to change one left wheel bearing at 105K, only had one small issue regarding the Clock Spring part in the steering wheel which controls the cruise control, airbag, and horn at 115K, that part is 350 plus labor so putting it off for now until inspection time since horn must work .

This vehicle is not only stylish it is perfect for those who love adventure. It easily pulls my small camper and the cargo space is more than enough for my Mastiff. Handling is easy and it provides a comfortable ride over long distances.

I have owned this for over a year and it?s been extremely reliable and just changed the plugs and seals to the intake manifold as you have to remove the manifold to change plugs!

  • Does exactly what it was designed to do.

I use vehicles as tools. I like the Xterra because it functions as designed. The benefits in design for off road and all weather travel have a cost; primarily gas mileage, and to a certain extent comfort. These trade-offs are not unique to the Xterra. The exterior design is attractive as well as utilitarian (although the front plastic bumper is far too week for off road, replaced two in three years, bought a brush guard, and then a reinforced off road bumper). The inside designed is plastic and looks cheap. But the modular plastic aspect of the interior is an advantage as I have modified the dash to mount AM/FM, CB, and short wave radios. Running antenna wire was not an issue with minimal drilling and some fire calking to preserve design integrity. The front seats are as comfortable as you will find in a real off road vehicle. The back seats are for short trips only. Three hours back there is enough. The storage space is not overly large but it is usable. The fold down back seats make up for this. I like to keep one back seat as a "jump seat" if needed. The hard plastic flooring makes for lots of load sliding unless you use tie downs (adjustable tiedown points provided in the design) or install a rubber mat insert. I like the availability of after market additions like dash parts, exterior light set, and off road upgrades. Without too much modification (or cost) I have put together a tough little mudder that is capable and reliable. I can camp out of for a week (a 6' man can lay out in the back if need be) I can crawl, commute, and communicate across several states with ease but this rig does not look like I'm getting ready for the apocalypse. Fold down antennas help reduce the "preper" profiling from neighbors and county police. I like that I can get off road as well as travel cross county in relative comfort. This is a good looking and capable vehicle that offers better comfort than other comparable off road offerings. The fuel efficiency is a real consideration but is worth it if you actually go off road. The interior looks cheap but is modular and can be easily customized. I bought it to do what it was designed to do. I really like the design and the flexibility of the Xterra. If you take care of this vehicle, it will take care of you. I live on the plains but drive to (and in) the mountains.

  • One of the only real SUVs left.

The Xterra is a REAL SUV, not one of those car based crossovers. The fuel economy isnt as good and the ride is more harsh, but its looks, power, reliability, simplicity and capabilities are unmatched.

  • Most reliable car I've owned

This car meets all of my needs. It has a stylish exterior decent gas mileage and does not require premium gas. I have owned it for 7 years now and performs the same now as it did when I first bought it. It's great for traveling or simply as a reliable family car.
