The Monte Carlo was so-so until the SS initialsand a sporty plastic nose were added. Then youth fell in love with it.
Monte Carlo is one of the last remaining rear-wheel drive, big (108-inchwheelbase, 200 inch length) cars at Chevrolet. The SS is a car for those whowant the sporty look but still can`t accept front-wheel drive or downsizingand for those who don`t fit or don`t like the subcompact Cavalier Z-24 ormidsize Celebrity Eurosport alternatives.
The `86 SS we drove had the 305 V-8 and automatic, which means the caralso is for those who don`t mind being held hostage by your local gas station. If stopping once a week for $20 worth of gas bothers you, try doing it twotimes a week with an SS.
The initials and plastic nose do little for wandering ride, less thanprecise handling and a bucket seat short on hip room that tends to keep thedriver in a near prone position. Base price: $12,466.
