Smaller crossover SUVs are fast becoming the rage for obvious reasons — easier handling, better gas mileage and a smoother ride — but full-size SUVs still have their place for heavy hauling and towing, and last week Ford revealed the redesign of its 2007 Expedition in Texas.

The new Expedition, inspired by the F-Series pickup truck, is available with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, and in regular or long-wheelbase models. The extended-length EL has a 131-inch wheelbase, roughly the same size as the Chevy Suburban, and the extra 14.8 inches of length results in decent room behind the third seat.

“Full-size SUV buyers are, perhaps, the most demanding customers of all,” said Cisco Codina, Ford group vice president for marketing, sales and service. “They want uncompromised capability and unquestioned toughness, along with interior flexibility and refinement. The new Expedition has been designed with unique customer appeal that makes it stand out in a competitive market.”

Not surprisingly, the styling bears a strong resemblance to the F-Series pickup. A new grille highlights a softer front fascia and dominant headlights. The Expedition EL is unique from the B-pillar back. The second-row doors are designed to ease access to the second and third seats.

Both the Expedition and Expedition EL are powered by Ford’s 5.4-liter, 300-horsepower V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. This single-overhead-cam engine has three valves per cylinder and 365 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity is 9,100 pounds.

Expedition buyers can choose from five wheel designs, including 20-inch chrome wheels. Ford said the new SUV’s interior has been refined with new seats that have larger bolsters, softer cushions and upgraded upholstery. The driver’s seat also has more travel to accommodate tall drivers. The XLT has six-way power seats, while leather seats have 10 adjustments. Heating and cooling is also available.

The console-mounted shift lever has a wood finish that matches the steering wheel, door panels and console.

The second-row seat is split 40/20/40, and the center section slides forward up to 11 inches to make it easier for front-seat passengers to reach a youngster in a child safety seat. Captain’s chairs are also offered as a second-row option. The second seat folds into the floor to create a flat load cargo floor. A power-folding third seat is offered, as is a power tailgate.

Entertainment options include a rear-seat DVD system, satellite radio, in-dash six-CD changer and a jack for iPods. The revised navigation system has a 6.5-inch touch screen and voice activation.

Ford said the Expedition’s new frame is 10 percent stiffer, in part because of tube-through-tube construction.

An independent rear suspension gives a smoother ride and better road-holding, in addition to enabling a fold-flat third seat. Ford says the brakes are larger, as well.

Safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes and vehicle stability control with rollover sensors. Side-curtain airbags cover all three rows of seats.

The new Expedition goes on sale this fall. Prices have not been announced.
