Whereas some of the competitors utilize a 400-volt battery with kilowatt-hour ratings ranging from 75 to 100, the Porsche Taycan uses an 800-volt battery with a kilowatt-hour rating of either 79.2 or 93.4 depending on the trim level. The use of an 800-volt battery is the first-ever in a production vehicle, and that matters because of one of our most important commodities: time.

There are two main hurdles for electric cars: charge rate — how long it takes to charge the battery — and range. The Taycan leaps these hurdles easily, meaning not only will you be able to get everywhere you need to be, but if you do need to charge, it will go quicker than in a competitor’s car.

The Taycan Is an Everyday Car for Getting Things Done

With that 800-volt battery, you’re looking at getting from 5% battery to 80% in about 22 minutes under ideal conditions when connected to a DC fast-charging station, like the ones available from Electrify America.

The high voltage of the battery allows the Taycan to pack power back into the battery at a high rate of speed. Faster charge times mean you can stop and top off the battery while you get a coffee or lunch. Otherwise, you can charge from home and have a car that’s ready to go every single morning.

In terms of how far you can go on a single charge, the Taycan 4S has an EPA estimated range of 227 miles. That’s impressive, but recently, multiple reports have come out that indicate you should be able to go far beyond that number in a road test. According to these reports, the Taycan could be a 300-mile-a-charge car should you drive it right.

Even if these reports are being generous, the 227 miles of range are far more than most people drive on a typical day. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, drivers average just 29 miles each day.

You’d have to cover nearly eight times the average number of miles traveled each day by American drivers (about 230 miles in total) to surpass the range of the Taycan. Even then, if reports are correct, depending on how carefully you drive, a single charge in the Taycan would be more than enough.

Say, for instance, you drove 27 miles to work on a given weekday. Then you drove to the dentist’s office at lunch — another 16 miles there and back. After that, you travel seven miles from the office to the supermarket. Then you load up your Taycan with groceries and drive the roughly 20 miles home if the supermarket is between work and your house.

Right there, what could be an average day for many drivers, you’re looking at only having used 70 miles of the battery’s capacity. If you go by the EPA estimate, you’ll have used only about 31% of the total range.

Long road trips are what doubters bring up next, and again the Taycan has plenty of range. Two hundred and twenty-seven miles is enough to travel from San Diego, California, to Santa Barbara, California, on a single charge. That trip is roughly 218 miles depending on where you leave from and where exactly your destination is. Once in Santa Barbara, you could find an Electrify America charger to recharge.

Your House, the Charging Station
