Hi, I'm Mike Hanley with cars.com and I'm here at the Detroit auto show. Two of the most significant debuts at this year show were the Dodge Ram and the Ford F-150.
Both have been redesigned for 2009 and we had a chance to take a good look at both of them. Now, I want to show you where we think one's better than the other. First criteria we looked at was styling. Now, both these trucks have the bold presence of their predecessors though, the front end been change especially, the grill. The Ford has a number of different grill designs, but what we really like about the Ram's grill is this forward swept design of it really gives the truck some presence and the advantage goes to the Ram. Next up is the interior. Both trucks have made big strides in terms of the quality of their cabins. And you can see it here in this Ram sport model, where it has a nice soft touch dash and stitching on the dashboard as well. The Ford has also made improvements, but we have to give the advantage to the Ram because of the level of quality of its new dash. The 2009 Ram has two particularly interesting features. First one is a Ram box cargo storage system. It's in the side of the cargo box wall, and you can store things like dirty tools in it. Second one is serious backseat TV, which Dodge has on their minivans. They've now brought it they're full-size trucks, and it's good for keeping the kids entertained when they're riding in the crew cab. Now let's look at the Ford F-150 features. This truck is available with power running boards, a step here that gives access to the cargo bed from the side and a railing you can use to help yourself up into the cargo bed, which first appeared on the Ford super duty. Now it's available on the light duty F150. Now I think comparison with the Ram, the features kind of meet different needs. So we're going to give this category a draw. We're talking about trucks. You have to talk about towing and the Ford wins this category. Even though towing figures haven't been announced yet the previous F-150 towed 11,000 pounds maximum. This one's going to tow even more and that best the Ram by a significant margin, which can tow 9,100 pounds. So advantage Ford. Now let's turn our attention to safety. Both trucks have standard side curtain airbags and a standard stability system, but what sets the Ford's apart is its roll stability control feature. And that includes an actual sensor that measures roll rate. That's important in a vehicle like a truck, and the advantage goes to the Ford. So that's two wins for the Ford. Two wins for the Dodge. Sorry to leave you with a draw here, but we haven't driven the vehicles yet. So once we are able to finally get behind the wheel, we'll be able to tell you who's a definitive winner.
