(upbeat music) <v Narrator>Cars dot com auto review. Hi, this is Joe Bruzek from cars dot com. We're here in Georgia, with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. Now for 2012 this is a convertible version of the SLS Coupe.
If you remember the SLS Coupe it had those really awesome gull-wing doors. But, obviously they can't happen with the Roadster. So with traditional swing out doors, can the SLS maintain its unique place? Typically a convertible hurts a car in three ways; trunk room, usability, and weight. The SLS mitigates all of those. Unlike other convertibles, the top does not intrude in the trunk at all. So you could lose virtually no space at all. The top's operation is quicker than a lot of soft tops. It takes roughly nine seconds to go up, and about 11 seconds to go down. And you can operate the top at speeds up to 30 miles an hour. The Roadster doesn't weigh that much more than the Coupe. The top's frame is made out of lightweight magnesium and aluminum. So what does that mean? The Roadster is 90 pounds heavier than the Coupe. Now that's not a lot compared to other convertibles that need a lot more chassis strengthening and heavy materials to reinforce the car after you chop the top off. One of the Roadsters biggest advantages is how it immerses you in its exhausts note. Well, the thing is, the Coupe also does that, but for my money, I would take those gull-wing doors because they're just so unique and so classic.
