Ford is expanding a recall from late 2024 that involves more than 20,500 examples of its Escape and Lincoln Corsair plug-in hybrid SUVs (Lincoln is Ford’s luxury arm) in an issue with the battery that may cause a fire.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-24 Escape PHEVs and model-year 2021-24 Corsair PHEVs. The issue is with a manufacturing defect in one or more of the high-voltage battery cells, which may result in a short circuit and cause the battery to fail; this increases the risk of a loss of drive power and a fire, which could result in a crash and injury.
The remedy is currently under development. At this time, owners are advised to only use Auto EV mode and will be instructed via mail to limit the maximum battery charge. Letters notifying owners will be mailed Dec. 1; second letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 24V954. Owners with further questions may contact Ford at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 25SC4), the National Traffic Safety Administration vehicle-safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or visit the NHTSA website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
