The global model seen here isn’t destined for the U.S. just yet. “We have not announced anything about Azera in the U.S., but we have previously said the car is indeed in our long-term plans, and a new model is in the near future,” Hyundai USA spokesman Dan Bedore said.
Considering that the Sonata and Hyundai Genesis look pretty much the same around the world, if Hyundai does intend to bring this model here, it will probably look something like this. Overall, it looks like a more stately and grown-up version of the Sonata.
While the Azera got a slight update for the 2011 model year – getting a more powerful and fuel-efficient engine and other aesthetic updates – it’s the automakers worst seller here.
We have praised the Azera in the past for its roomy cabin and superb reliability, but we also mentioned that while it’s a relative bargain in the large-car class, its regal looks are probably holding the car back. If Hyundai decides to sell the Azera here, it will certainly have the looks to compete with the Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima this time around.
