For the second year in a row, Fort Collins, Colo., has earned the award for having the safest drivers, according to Allstate, the insurance company that published the study.
The report ranks America’s 200 largest cities in terms of car collision frequency. Fort Collins’ mindful, attentive drivers experienced an auto collision every 14 years, according to Allstate. That’s 28.6% less than the national average of about 10 years. Other safest cities include Lincoln, Neb. (12.9 years), Knoxville, Tenn. (12.2 years), and Chattanooga, Tenn. (11.9 years).
Most of the safest cities are medium-sized metropolitan areas, so Allstate also compiled a list of the safest cities with populations of more than 1 million people. All the cities on that list are actually more likely to get into an accident than the national average, though Phoenix nearly meets the average. San Diego and San Antonio are the next safest big cities.
The city with the least safe drivers, according to the study? Washington, D.C., with drivers experiencing an auto collision every 4.8 years.
