2014-2018 Ram 1500 Crankshaft: Recall Alert

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 58,000 vehicles, including model-year 2014-18 Ram 1500 pickup trucks equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines

The Problem: The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and camshaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall that can increase the risk of a crash.

Ram parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue, and vehicles equipped with FCA’s newer, third-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 are similarly unaffected.

The Fix: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion by reading the camshaft position signal in the event that the crankshaft position signal is lost. All repairs will be done for free.

What Owners Should Do: FCA will begin notifying owners Oct. 2. Owners can call the automaker at 800-853-1403, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
