2015-2017 Ford Transit: Recall Alert

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 370,000 model-year 2015-17 Ford Transit full-size vans with medium, long and extended wheelbases, and chassis cab/cutaway vans with medium wheelbases built at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri between Jan. 17, 2014, and June 15, 2017

The Problem: The flexible driveshaft coupling could have a crack that could allow it to separate while driving or allow for unintended movement when in Park without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of injury or a crash. In addition, if the driveshaft separates from the transmission it can result in secondary damage to surrounding parts, including the brakes and fuel lines, also increasing the risk of injury or a crash. Ford is unaware of any injuries or crashes related to this issue.

The Fix: Based on field data, Ford said vans with less than 30,000 miles do not require immediate repair, nor do vans in which the coupling unit has already been replaced. Ford said that the flexible couplings should not deteriorate sufficiently to separate from the driveshaft until the vans have been driven 30,000 miles. Based on that, Ford is advising owners with vans that have less than 30,000 miles on the odometer to schedule an appointment for a replacement coupling when they near that number. Owners whose vans have 30,000 miles or more should contact their dealer for an immediate interim repair, which will be to have the flexible coupling replaced. Flexible couplings should be replaced every 30,000 miles until the permanent repair is available. The permanent repair will involve replacing the coupling with a redesigned flexible coupling with a modified driveshaft bracket or a revised driveshaft equipped with a universal joint. All repairs will be done free of charge.

What Owners Should Do: Ford did not immediately announce an owner identification schedule. Owners can call Ford at 800-392-3673, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
