2017 Mazda CX-5 Earns Top Safety Pick Plus

CARS.COM — Mazda’s redesigned CX-5 compact SUV aced the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash tests, earning the Top Safety Pick Plus designation. That’s good news considering the 2017 CX-5 is rated only four out of five stars in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash testing.

The CX-5 met all of IIHS’ Top Safety Pick Plus criteria, including earning good scores in all five crashworthiness tests, a superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable rating for headlights. In the challenging small overlap front test, IIHS said “measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity,” and that all airbags sufficiently deployed and gave appropriate support to the dummy’s head and torso.
Two of the CX-5’s main rivals also earned IIHS’ Top Safety Pick Plus award, the 2017 Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4; Ford’s rival Escape did not do well in the small overlap front test, disqualifying it from Top Safety Pick status.
