CARS.COM — The compact SUV segment is one of the hottest in the auto industry, which makes Mazda’s debut of its redesigned CX-5 especially well-timed. The new version continues in the vein of its predecessor both in terms of overall styling and class-up interior quality, and that should position it well in a sea of recently updated competitors.

The previous-generation CX-5 was one of the first Mazdas to adopt the brand’s current design language, and the new CX-5’s styling evolves the approach with crisper lines, smoother body sides and a wider grille. The overall shape is similar to the outgoing model’s, and though pictures minimize the design differences between the two, they become more apparent when you see the new CX-5 in person.

Rear styling differences are subtle. Changes include thinner taillights and a restyled, body-colored bumper. The rear bumper is practically flush with the liftgate, continuing a trend we’ve seen on other newer SUVs but one that doesn’t bode well for urban street parking situations.

Certain interior cues are familiar, like the three-pod instrument cluster and three-spoke steering wheel, but the dashboard has a much flatter appearance with unique pentagon-shaped air vents. There aren’t many buttons or knobs in the middle of the dash, giving it a clean appearance, but it’s good to see knobs for both stereo volume and cabin temperature rather than the touch-sensitive controls in some competitors.
