Vehicles Affected: Approximately 10,200 model-year 2018 Ford Escape SUVs manufactured between Nov. 13 and Nov. 29, 2017, at the automaker’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky

The Problem: The top hat diffuser may detach from the side air curtain inflator during deployment, potentially tearing the inflator and preventing full inflation; this also could result in the diffuser becoming a projectile in the vehicle cabin, increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.

Ford is unaware of any injuries or accidents associated with this issue.

The Fix: Dealers will replace, as necessary, the affected side air curtain assemblies for free.

What Owners Should Do: Ford did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule. Owners can call the automaker at 866-436-7332, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
