The answer depends on the engine. The XC60 features three options with separate EPA-rated figures for each. The T5 gets a 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that comes in at 22/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined; the T6 features a 316-hp, supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four rated at 21/27/23 mpg; and the T8 plug-in hybrid has a 313-hp, supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four paired with an electric motor and battery pack for a max of 400 hp and 59 mpg-equivalent.

Whichever you choose, it’ll cost you more this week, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report. AAA reports that the national average for regular gas rose 5 cents from last week to $2.56 on Thursday. Premium gas — which the XC60 requires for optimal performance — was up 6 cents to $3.08 on average. Diesel fuel, meanwhile, climbed 5 cents to $2.81.

As usual, where you live will affect how much you’re paying to fill up the XC60. A few examples:

  • Regular jumped by 11 cents in California to an average of $3.23, the highest in the country — largely the result of a 12-cent increase in the state’s fuel tax. With premium at $3.48, for the XC60 T5 and T6, that means you’ll pay $65.42 to fill it all the way up; the smaller tank of the XC60 T8 to accommodate for the hybrid setup will cost you $45.94.
  • Hawaii was next highest for regular at $3.23 ($3.46 for premium), followed by Alaska, where regular rose 9 cents the past week to $3.18 ($3.34 for premium). For the T5 and T6, that means paying between $62 and $65 at the pump; the T8 will cost you around $45.
  • Alabama had the lowest average price for regular at $2.25, followed by Mississippi at $2.27 and South Carolina at $2.28. For the T5 and T6, that means the cheapest you’ll be paying at the pump is $42.30; for the T8, you’ll fork over $29.70 to fill ‘er up.

Most motorists are digging deeper to fill their tanks as high demand combines with supply issues to drive up pump prices in all but a handful of states. The Energy Information Administration said demand for gasoline last month was the highest for October since 2006. At the same time, a leak in a pipeline that supplies the Midwest and slowdowns at several refineries undergoing seasonal maintenance have reduced the supply of gas to some areas, boosting pump prices.

What’s more, U.S. oil was trading at a yearly high of nearly $57 a barrel early Thursday, up from around $50 four weeks ago. So if you’re thinking about shopping for an XC60 and you’re concerned about fuel costs, consider your alternatives — like, say, a Volvo V60.
