Porsche Is Taycan It to the Streets for 2020

Looks like: A sports sedan. There’s very little that calls out its electric powertrain and a lot that signifies its Porsche pedigree.

After months of dribbling out information about its first-ever all-electric vehicle, Porsche opened the faucet today on the 2020 Taycan. The four-door electric sports car comes in Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo models — yet both will employ something quite different than a turbo engine: a 600-plus horsepower dual-electric motor setup.

The new Taycan competes most directly with the Tesla Model S, but it costs more and offers less range.


Based loosely on the Mission E concept car that debuted in 2017, the Taycan shares a lot of the concept’s styling cues, including a sloping roofline, contoured body, flat face accented by winglike flares over the headlights and slit-design headlights. In back, the Taycan also borrows the Mission E’s lightbar with an integrated, glass-effect Porsche logo.


The Taycan’s screens steal the show inside — and there are several. The new multimedia system’s 10.9-inch touchscreen with an optional passenger display combine to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. Below that is an 8.4-inch touch panel with haptic feedback that controls climate settings among other vehicle functions. Porsche says the lower panel incorporates handwriting recognition. Lastly, a curved 16.8-inch screen for the instrument cluster can be configured four different ways.

What you won’t find are traditional knobs and buttons, which have been replaced by the large screens, haptic response panels and voice control operation that’s engaged by saying “Hey Porsche.”

Also new for Porsche are some cabin materials options. Aside from traditional leather, Porsche offers what it calls “sustainably tanned Club Leather” that uses olive leaves in the tanning process. Lastly, there’s a leather-free cabin made from recycled polyester fibers and recycled fishing nets. Interior color palettes include Black-Lime Beige, Blackberry, Atacama Beige and Meranti Brown — all exclusively available for the Taycan. The doors and consoles can come in wood, matte carbon, embossed aluminum or fabric trim.

The Taycan’s sloping roofline means headroom is sparse, but your feet will be fine once they’re parked in the car’s “foot garages” — Porsche’s ridiculous term for recesses in the battery in the rear footwells.

Under the Hood

The all-wheel-drive Taycan uses a 93-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack to power dual motors good for up to 670 horsepower in Turbo S models and up to 616 hp in Turbo versions. Porsche says the Taycan Turbo S can go from zero-to-60 mph in 2.6 seconds and has a top speed of 161 miles per hour.

The Taycan uses an 800-volt electrical system and Porsche expects it to have a range of 256-279 miles, depending on the model, though the EPA has not yet released official estimates. Against its main competitor, the Model S, such specs looks weak.

The Model S long range is EPA-rated for 370 miles of range, and the quickest version — the Performance edition with Ludicrous Mode, which starts around $100,000 — scoots to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. However, the Model S is ineligible for the vast majority of $7,500 in maximum federal tax credits because Tesla has sold enough vehicles to exceed the government’s allotted quota. Porsche has not.

The Taycan’s charge estimates are impressive, however. Porsche says that in just five minutes, the Taycan’s battery can be recharged using a direct-current fast-charger for a range of 62 miles; it can recharge from 5 percent up to 80 percent in around 22 minutes.

Porsche says other variants of the Taycan will join the lineup, starting with the Taycan Cross Turismo at the end of next year.
